What Is The 12 Step Programme & How Does It Work?
Dependence on drugs and/or alcohol is never healthy, but with appropriate care and treatment, you can be supported on your entire recovery journey.
In fact, at The Turning Point, we guide you through each stage of your recovery with patience, understanding, and compassion. This includes the use of the principles of the 12 Step Programme, a renowned recovery programme.
In this blog, we’ll explore what the 12-step approach to recovery is and what it entails. Don’t stop reading!
Origins
The 12 Step Programme was first developed as a recovery approach for Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), but has been used for helping individuals recover from all sorts of substances, including drugs. As a result, this has led to the implementation of the 12-step model for organisations across the globe as part of their approach to recovery.
What It Involves
The original 12 steps have been reformed over the years, and each step might differ depending on the fellowship. However, their core principles remain the same. This includes:
Honesty - admission that we are powerless over alcohol or other substance that we are addicted to
Faith - belief that a higher power has the ability to help us heal
Surrender - we surrender to the fact that we cannot heal by ourselves
Soul searching - we must identify our problems, probing our inner self and worries
Integrity - admission of our wrongs in front of others
Acceptance - willingness to accept and let go of our defects
Humility - humbly asking a higher power to do what we cannot
Willingness - making a list of persons we have harmed, with a willingness to make amends
Forgiveness - asking for forgiveness to those we’ve done wrong
Maintenance - continuing with self-reflection and admission of our wrongs
Making contact - discovering what our plan for the future is by consulting with a higher power
Service - carrying the message to others, practising the principles of the programme in daily life
